Ringgold County of Iowa, Liberty Township, Section 31, From Iowa Highway 2 in the city of Mount Ayr, Iowa turn north on West Street, approximately 1.7 miles. The entrance is a long winding gravel lane, east of the road.
The cemetery is fenced in, however undergrowth hides most of the fences. The main part lies on the crest of a hill running north-south with another portion extending down the hill to the east. There are a few monuments lying in a small mowed area outside the entrance.
Extensive questioning reveals that the plot itself, with records of burials, ownership, etc. is lost. Several older citizens recall that it was last used while kept at the City Hall. There is no record at the county Recorders office.
The following is not verified, only printed as hearsay from some family members of persons buried in this cemetery: Joshua Chance, buried here, gave the land for the cemetery. Numerous relatives of his are buried here. Local family names found here are Newton, Beard, Faris, Miller, Warrick, Cavett, Denhart, Kling, and Shidler. A Fife is buried here. The park just north of the cemetery is Fife's Grove at the present time. Several Civil War Veterans are buried here. There are a large number of apparently unmarked graves and a large number of stones broken and piled two or three together. Also a number of plain cement markers, and even a number of boulders that apparently are markers. Some monuments have obviously been replaced by new stones courtesy of younger family members.
The first to be buried was evidently Joshua Chance in August 1858, followed by a Cavett in October of that year. In the 60's, Roach, Chance, and Clayton's were buried. The majority are dated in the 1870's and 1880's. A number in the flu epidemic of 1918, several in the depression 30's and the most recent in 1998. The cemetery is not closed; people simply began using the Rose Hill Cemetery in the nearby town of Mount Ayr. Many verses were so small they were weathered and unreadable. There are a number of "X" marks on the map to indicate definite but unmarked burial depressions. There appear to be 15 rows, running north/south.
The names and date are printed as they appear on the monuments. This roster was prepared in August, 1975, by Mr. and Mrs. Dwaine Morgan and Mrs. Lorene Morgan.
